Community Health Network and Lifepoint Behavioral Health announce intention to build new behavioral health hospitals in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 18, 2024) – Community Health Network and Lifepoint Behavioral Health, a business unit of Lifepoint Health, announced today their intention to form a joint venture partnership. Through the proposed joint venture, Community and Lifepoint Behavioral Health will build and operate new inpatient behavioral health hospitals as part of Community’s broader network of behavioral healthcare in central Indiana, increasing available behavioral health beds serving central Indiana to meet future needs.

“Community Health Network has a long history and strong commitment for providing behavioral healthcare to our communities," said Jason Fahrlander, chief operating officer. “Community Fairbanks Behavioral Health offers a robust continuum of care serving all persons regardless of age or need.”

The new hospitals will provide inpatient and outpatient services for patients diagnosed with a broad range of behavioral health needs. The facilities will be specially designed to create a therapeutic environment for patients, featuring open, airy spaces with amenities that include spacious patient rooms, community areas, outdoor courtyards and state-of-the-art clinical spaces.

The need for mental healthcare in Indiana is great—an academic study released last year found that two-thirds of Marion County residents who needed treatment for a serious mental illness did not receive it. “Community is committed to helping Hoosiers connect with the care they need, and this partnership with Lifepoint Behavioral Health demonstrates our determination to innovate and collaborate in order to make that happen,” Fahrlander said.

A partner to health systems nationwide, Lifepoint Behavioral Health specializes in providing compassionate care across the behavioral healthcare continuum. The company currently operates 24 behavioral health hospitals, including Sycamore Springs. Lifepoint’s programs address the unique needs of various patient populations and provide evidence-based therapies with distinct short- and long-term goals of improving and sustaining mental health.

“It is our intention to expand access to high-quality specialty care in all of the communities we serve,” said Russ Bailey, president of Lifepoint Behavioral Health. “Through a partnership with Community Health Network, we better leverage our organizations’ respective strengths to serve our patients while investing in the communities we call home. I look forward to all we will accomplish together as we build a robust network of behavioral healthcare in and beyond central Indiana.”

This anticipated investment in behavioral healthcare follows a successful partnership in inpatient rehabilitation care in Indiana. Community and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, also a business unit of Lifepoint Health, currently operate a network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, including Community Rehabilitation Hospital North in northeast Indianapolis, Community Rehabilitation Hospital South in Greenwood and Community Rehabilitation Hospital West in Brownsburg.

Upon completion of the behavioral health expansion, Lifepoint Behavioral Health will manage day-to-day operations of the new sites of care. The new hospitals will fold seamlessly into the current Community Fairbanks Behavioral Health continuum of care and support Community’s mission of enhancing the health and well-being across all the communities we serve.
