52 million people in the U.S are currently living with a mental health issue while more than 112 million Americans reside in areas where mental health services are scarce.1 Taking into account these statistics, CVS Health polled over 2,200 adults online to gain additional insight into the prevalence of mental health today and the importance of behavioral health access in every local community.2
Survey findings
It was found that 59% of Americans have expressed concerns around their mental health or the mental health of their loved ones – a nine percent increase from April 2020. Within this larger group, subgroups such as the LGBTQ+, young adult and Black communities reported facing greater mental health and well-being challenges since the onset of COVID-19.
- 57% of LGBTQ+ respondents expressed concerns over their own mental health —a 20% increase compared with other respondents.
- 74% of adults ages 18-34 reported concerns over their own metal health as well as the mental health of their loved ones — a 12% increase from 2020.
- Black Americans experienced an 11% increase in mental health concerns since the pandemic began.
- 40% of the survey respondents ages 65 and older stated they have experienced mental health concerns for themselves, family or friends since the beginning of the pandemic.2,3
Importance of Behavioral Health Access in Your Local Community
Although these numbers continue to see a steady incline, the likelihood of these individuals seeking out and discussing behavioral health treatment has also risen to 56%. This makes accessing high-quality behavioral health treatment a necessity in local communities across the country.
Through the use of innovative technology, specially trained staff, and access to top-rated resources and data tailored to meet the needs of the rising behavioral health patient population, hospitals can begin to see optimal outcomes within their broader community as well as the sub-communities listed above. These enhanced outcomes can span across the care continuum, benefiting patients with both physical and mental illnesses – something that can be further leveraged with the guidance and support from a trusted partner.
