When Duke LifePoint Healthcare acquired UP Health System (formerly Marquette General Health System) in 2012, the Superior Health Foundation (SHF) was established to help support the needs of those who can't afford the proper healthcare or insurance and fund health education, programs and research on preventing illness and promoting the health and welfare of the surrounding communities in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

A local foundation helps to advance the health of its community

In its efforts to help improve the health of the communities it serves, the SHF hosts yearly events, including its Golf Outing and Annual Gala to raise funds for UP organizations like Cancer Care of Marquette County to help patients with out-of-pocket cancer expenses; Camp New Day, a one-week summer camp that cares for the health and well-being of youth impacted by an incarcerated family member or caregiver; and the HOPE Animal Assisted Crises Response, which provides canine comfort and support to crisis victims across the UP.

The SHF has also established the Run for Life Organ Donation Fund to provide financial assistance for out-of-pocket expenses for organ donors and recipients, and the Superior Health Foundation Breast Health Fund, which offers breast health expense assistance for women and men in the UP with help from funds raised during the annual Painting the Peninsula Pink fundraiser.
