Conemaugh Cancer Center Opens Radiation Oncology Program

Johnstown, PA (January 22, 2018) – Conemaugh Health System hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to celebrate the addition of radiation oncology services at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Health system leaders, physicians, community leaders and government officials attended the ribbon-cutting event to tour the recently expanded, state-of-the-art facility and preview the cutting-edge equipment. The facility expansion and renovation were made possible by a nearly $6 million capital investment from Duke LifePoint Healthcare, of which Conemaugh Health System is a part.

With the addition of its new radiation oncology program, Conemaugh Health System now offers comprehensive cancer treatments under one roof. A full complement of treatment options is available, including:

  • radiation oncology services;
  • radiofrequency (RF) ablation therapy;
  • interventional radiology therapies;
  • advanced surgical oncology services (colorectal, hepatobiliary, lung, prostate, and breast);
  • stereotactic radiosurgery;
  • advanced chemotherapy treatments; and
  • biopsy and computed tomography (CT) imaging for diagnosing cancers.

In conjunction with this important service line expansion, Conemaugh Health System will rename its longstanding oncology program, which was formerly called Conemaugh Cancer Care Center, to the Conemaugh Cancer Center.

“Cancer is the second leading cause of death in our region,” said Susan Williams, M.D., chief medical officer of Conemaugh Health System. “As the region’s destination for patient-centered cancer care, we are Making Communities Healthier by offering the breadth and depth of treatment options needed to give patients their best shot at remission, recovery and long-term quality of life. We are proud to provide high quality cancer care close to home for those we serve.”

Ali Tunio, Ph.D., M.D., board-certified radiation oncologist, has joined the staff of the Conemaugh Cancer Center and will lead the radiation oncology program.

“I practice with the philosophy that every patient and every tumor is different, so having a wide variety of cancer treatments available in one location makes it easier to develop and deliver the best treatment plan for each person,” Dr. Tunio said. “I’m excited to join the talented medical staff at the Conemaugh Cancer Center and look forward to working in this facility that was clearly designed with patient safety, comfort and privacy in mind.”

 At the event, guests had the opportunity to preview the state-of-the-art linear accelerator, which features 4D guided imaging that adjusts to patient’s breathing patterns and motion, and delivers very precise, customized radiation treatments in a short period of time, sparing healthy tissue.

During the ribbon-cutting celebration, leaders from Conemaugh Health System also announced the construction of a new molecular lab for precision medicine, which will further expand Conemaugh Cancer Center’s capabilities. It is slated to open later this year.

Conemaugh Cancer Center is located at 1020 Franklin Street in Johnstown, with radiation oncology services located on the lower level of the building. Appointments may be made by calling (814) 534-1245. To learn more about Conemaugh Health System, visit Conemaugh.org.
