The Community

Ishpeming has a long history of mining, commemorated by the Cliffs Shaft Mining Museum and the Michigan Iron Industry Museum. The area includes four excellent school districts boasting performance records significantly higher than state and national averages, and a wide variety of businesses, including art galleries, sporting and outdoors stores, a natural food and artists’ co-op, restaurants, hotels and camping and vacation rentals.

Nestled in the midst of beautiful inland lakes and streams, Ishpeming and western Marquette County offer many unique opportunities for recreation and relaxation. The Iron Ore Heritage Trail incorporates the area’s mining history on a 26-mile route used by walkers, bikers, runners, inline skaters, equestrians, cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. Ishpeming is considered the U.S. birthplace of organized skiing, and winter sports opportunities abound, including the nationally renowned Noquemanon Cross Country Ski Marathon, the Al Quaal Recreational Area’s downhill and cross-country skiing, and international ski jumping events at Suicide Hill.
